I played in the Pauper tournament at Dragon’s Roost on October 6. There were 8 players. I went 2-1 and took third place. I played UB Serpents, and I lost to Jund Bridges Good Stuff in the second round. I also played against Izzet Delver and Rakdos Reanimator. I saw another player with Infect aggro, and another was playing Azorius blink control. I heard that the player who took second place was playing Bogles; I’m not sure about the player who took first.
I also played in the Pauper tournament at Dragon’s Roost on October 13. There were 8 players. I went 2-1 and took fourth place. I played UB Serpents again; all of my matches were against some variation of Serpents. I lost match 1 to Izzet Serpents which was also running Thunderous Wrath, which seemed like a fun include (and blasted me three times in a row to win game 2).
Match 2 was against another UB Serpents list, but my opponent noted that they were still in the process of obtaining copies of Tolarian Terror, so the deck was quite incomplete. Round 3 was also against Izzet Serpents, but a much different list than my round 1 opponent.
I also saw someone playing Slivers. I think the person who took second place was playing Gruul Ponza. One thing I wondered about as I biked home in the rain is whether my UB Serpents list is more of a tempo deck or a control deck. My matches felt more like control matches, but that may have been because they were all variations of the mirror. The sideboard also allows for something of a control pivot, particularly when my opponent is running red in a non-aggro shell; I didn’t actually make that hard pivot in any of my matches, and I think it could have been beneficial in round 1.
